I drew this Mary Marvel because I was bored and waiting for my brother. For whatever reason, I’ve noticed a lot of artists tend to draw Mary Marvel as a really young girl and I never quite got that. I think I’m missing something there. There’s probably some popular comic where she’s a little girl that I’m just oblivious to aside from that Jeff Smith one. Or is it all because Jeff Smith? Pretty much all my exposure to Mary Marvel was from a Showcase presents for the 70s DC stuff so that’s the Mary Marvel that comes to mind when I think about her.

Mary's age has generally stayed the same for both identities, although she's been depicted ranging from a young child to about 17 over the years. I think the only time she aged slightly was the 80s comic, where she went from teen to older teen/young adult.

Great piece. :)

As for why Mary's drawn like a child--she was also a child in the recent all-ages on-going "Billy Batson & The Magic of Shazam," and I think she might have been younger in Batman: Brave & The Bold. I imagine it might also be a little bit in protest of more recent modern comic appearances, where she was turned into a bad girl and was more sexual.
